GRIZZLOCKE RANDOMISER!
So here we go, randomiser Nuzlocke for Generation 3, using Pokemon Sapphire. Standard Nuzlocke rules apply, but in terms of randomiser:
- Global replacement clause – All Pokemon that appear are subbed out for every instance that they appear in.
- Ability Reshuffle – All abilities are reshuffled across all Pokemon. Evolving will cause a reshuffle.
- TM Randomise – TM Moves have been reshuffled although TM compatibility remains unchanged.
- Item Reshuffle - All static field items aside from HMs have been reshuffled into other things.
And so our journey begins with GRIZZ, a BOY trainer that has just moved into a new house where the local time is 4:34PM. However, who cares about setting the clock, because grabbing that POTION from our PC (Which for some reason was already good to go despite just arriving via the removalist truck) and off we go! Well… Apparently DAD was on the tv but I missed it.
We go next door and meet our neighbour’s kid. She’s apparently making sure her Pokemon are all healed and… wait… Doesn’t she get her Pokemon after ours? Is this some strange quantum state where her Pokemon is in constant flux until we choose ours? This would’ve been solved if we could just ask what Pokemon she did have, but no, she rushes out before we could really ask anything of import. Jerk.
Heading north we run into some poor schmuck that’s being chased around by a puppy. He calls out that we should loot his bag because he’s a goner. Inside there are three Pokemon:
+ MISDREAVUS
+ WURMPLE
+ GROUDON
Wait, I’m sorry, what? GROUDON? WELP. The immediate thing I notice is that this puppy, a POOCHYENA has SAND STREAM. I also note the lack of DROUGHT that would normally be popping up around now. GROUDON knows MUD SHOT and SCARY FACE. Safe to say that one attack fells the poor pooch and the professor thanks us. Apparently we get to keep the Pokemon we looted because the rules of finders keepers seems to be in play. We name it ROCKY.
GROUDON obtained!
After telling that the professor can get stuffed with his suggestion to go meet his kid for a second time, we reluctantly agree. We head back out onto ROUTE 101, and thankfully as we do not have balls, the Nuzlocke restrictions have not started as of yet. The first thing we run into is a KADABRA, which ROCKY makes short work of. Following that was a KRABBY, which met the same fate. OLDALE TOWN is uneventful with one guy giving us a free sample in the way of another POTION. But hey, given we’re right outside the store, we go shopping for another 4 POTIONS and pick up 3 ANTIDOTES. Poison here will continue ticking outside of battle, so it’s better to be safe. We are now holding $1500 left.
Up onto ROUTE 103 to try and find MAY, we run into a SILCOON. Funnily enough, as soon as the battle starts, DROUGHT activates. One guess as to how that battle ended up, though. Next up is a CHARMELEON, which… well, y’know. Finally, we run into a BAGON right as we’re about to leave the grass; it got angry at us but it still fell to ROCKY. MAY apparently has a MISDREAVUS, which thankfully does not have LEVITATE. MAY is convinced that my battling prowess means I could befriend many a Pokemon if I wanted. Yes. “Befriend”. She leads the way back home and the professor hands me over a POKEDEX while MAY hands me my first allotment of POKEBALLS. MOM gives me the RUNNING SHOES and thinks ROCKY is adorable. If only she knew.
Now that the Nuzlocke has started, it’s time to find what our encounter on ROUTE 101 is. We run into a CROCONAW! This is problematic for it is only level 2 and ROCKY is apparently looking to smash face. We start by throwing balls at it while the CROCONAW has a ragefest over what we’re doing. It’s after our second ball that STATIC triggers; apparently ROCKY is rocking some swanky ability of his own. However, after all five balls are thrown, this thing refuses to be captured and we’re forced to default on our first potential catch. ROCKY does hit level 8 afterwards though, so silver linings.
Capture failed on ROUTE 101!
Back in OLDALE TOWN we hit up the mart for 9 more POKEBALLS. Then up to ROUTE 103 for our second encounter. Almost immediately we run into a SILCOON at level 4. We throw a ball and it stays inside immediately. It’s a male and we go for the name DAVE.
SILCOON obtained on ROUTE 103!
I go to switch DAVE to the front to do some switch training before realising that ROCKY has been holding TM15 this whole time. Upon closer inspection, TM15 is for the move WRAP. Not necessarily bad in the way of selling it for additional money maybe. I instead decide to teach it to ROCKY if only because we need some insurance against potential fliers and LEVITATE. We step out onto ROUTE 102 to see what our encounter here is, and look to train up DAVE so he can fend for himself by way of switch training. Our encounter is a VOLTORB, which after a WRAP succumbs to a POKEBALL. We name it KATAMARI and continue on.
VOLTORB obtained on ROUTE 102!
We check our new addition and find it’s got the ability TRACE. We check DAVE too and he has BLAZE, although that’s due to change in a few levels. Well, it would’ve if DAVE wasn’t caught out against a KRABBY which had SHADOW TAG. With nothing but HARDEN and no means of escaping, he’s a goner. My choices are to try and tank as many BUBBLE attacks as I can given they’re only doing 2 damage a piece, or let DAVE die. I choose to try and keep him alive in the hopes this KRABBY will eventually fall to STRUGGLE. I realise that eventually my HARDEN will run out of PP and the battle devolves into a STRUGGLE battle. Somehow, he comes out alive and I now have the option of continuing his training using STRUGGLE to avoid this happening again; so I do.
After bringing him up to level 8, we step back out onto the route to take on a trainer or two to get some cash money for more medicine. YOUNGSTER CALVIN leads with a TYROGUE which ROCKY deals with promptly. Next up, BUG CATCHER RICK leads with JYNX which falls to ROCKY as well. He then brings out MACHOP, which DAVE gets a look at before I send in ROCKY to clean up. We talk to a kid who sneezes, pick up 2 ORAN BERRIES and 2 PECHA BERRIES before YOUNGSTER ALLEN makes comment on how we’re both beginners. He leads with AZUMARILL which poses some small threat to ROCKY before it’s shotted with mud. DAVE gets a look at his TORKOAL before ROCKY comes back in and sweeps. LASS TIANA catches me as I’m wandering around and leads with an OCTILLERY. She then brings out a SWELLOW to which DAVE gets a look at but then I’m curious as to how badly things could fare. I switch back into ROCKY thinking that his bulk should be more than fine to weather some attacks despite now having to rely on WRAP, but this is why we taught it to him in the first place.
We hit PETALBURG CITY just to heal up and then head back into ROUTE 102 to get some training done. Turns out kids don’t have much in the way of money. We do find a GLITTER MAIL laying on the ground though. We train up until DAVE becomes a beautiful butterfly and learns ABSORB. Now that we functionally have two Pokemon capable of actually keeping pace, we go talk to DAD at the gym and get roped into helping some schmuck named WALLY get his first Pokemon. Bastard gets a LUDICOLO after using a DUNSPARCE. Well, it’d uh… definitely keep him from getting lonely. We report back and step out onto ROUTE 104 for our next encounter and find… LICKITUNG. Through a joint effort between ROCKY and DAVE to weaken and then paralyse it, it… eats up all 9 of our balls and still refuses to be caught.
Capture failed on ROUTE 104!
Given we have no balls left and we’re looking another whole area of PETALBURG WOODS, we head back to PETALBURG CITY to regroup and save up for next time. Potentially could get more money fighting the couple of trainers on the way to the woods and come back, but that can wait.
