NAME --Maltensia Birch
GENDER --Female
AGE --18
AFFILIATION --Neutral
CLASS --Breeder | Pokewitch | Misdreavus PokemorphAPPEARANCE --
At first glance, Maltensia doesn't seem all that strange. Sure, she might dress like a reject from some bygone grunge era, but that's just her personal style. Her clothes have definitely seen better days; their bagginess hiding her body beneath draping capes and formless dresses. And sure, maybe she could afford to pick out a few more colours than black. However, it helps her keep to herself, blending into the shadows and becoming unrecognizable at a moment's notice.
Seemingly blessed with creamy, pale skin, it is clear she hasn't spent a lot of time in the sun. Unfortunately, this paleness isn't pretty so much as sickly. Any scratch or bruise seems to show up like a beacon on her flesh - unnaturally blackish-purple. Particularly, it betrays the fact that she hasn't gotten a good night's sleep in a while; contrasting milkiness with dark bags beneath slightly sunken eyes.
Another hint that something might be off is her hair; a short, pixie-bob, is streaked rather than natural. Dark black it almost seems blue, tipped with purple at it's spiky ends. But hey, people dye their hair all the time! Perhaps what worries people the most is the fact that she keeps her eyes hidden behind dark tinted sunglasses. According to her, it is to protect delicate corneas from a 'sun allergy'. What they hide, though, are odd-coloured irises; a crimson colour that seems unnatural.
However, it's as simple to prove her less-than-human nature simply by looking at her feet. Clad in ever-comfortable combat boots, she strangely never leaves footprints when she walks. And while she is scarecrow tall and assuredly thin beneath her layers of clothing, it has nothing to do with lightness of frame. In fact, the careful eye will notice that her feet doesn't even tough the ground. While she does walk, her feet are always at most an inch to a foot above the ground.
PERSONALITY --
Anyone meeting her for the first time could say that there are two 'attitudes' at war within Maltensia, which makes up her everyday morality. Deep down, she is a genuinely good person - wanting to believe the best in people and Pokemon, despite how many times she has been proven wrong. As seen in her past, she's witness genuine 'evil' and closed-mindedness, but unless she gets a strong 'vibe' about someone, she'll give anyone a chance. Despite her dark exterior - she believes in doing good, and being repaid threefold for every action she does.
At the same time, this knowledge of a darker side of human nature has left her jaded and defensive - while she'll give others the benefit of the doubt, it might be harder for others to do the same for her. Perhaps it's her inherent gothicness, or general teenage bitchitude, but she tends to talk in sarcastic comments and put-upon sighs. She doesn't have time for people who ask too many questions, or prattle on about their own problems. Honestly, most of their problems are pretty small compared to the things she's seen. She may only be eighteen, but she's seen a lot. Even trying to think the best of people fails her occasionally. She is likely to test the steadiest of nerves.
To those who have been made privy to her unique status, one might wonder exactly home much of her personality has been influenced by her Pokemon side. Indeed, it enhances a sort of animal essence to her attitude - making her more prone to sarcastic outbursts, or desires to test people to see if they're worthy of keeping around. The Misdreavus in her adds an aura of manipulative to her - after all, before the bonding, they [the Pokemon] was much older than her human host. Misdreavus, in natural form, feed on fear and misery; while the human-formed Maltensia doesn't need to, there's a bit of her that enjoys watching even the people she wants to help squirm a bit.
Or is it all the left-over Pokemon nature? It's hard to say, as Maltensia hasn't spent a lot of time around people as of late. Perhaps she is naturally suspicious of getting too close, even though deep down she knows that everyone needs, if not deserves, a second chance. She has been raised to be self-reliant, and even though she starting to try and break her old habits, they are not easy to toss aside.
HISTORY --
Maltensia'd love to talk about her mother and father, but seeing as she has no clue who they are, it'd be rather pointless. She was a basket case - as in, she was unceremoniously dumped on the steps of an orphanage when she was just a few days old. Sad, maybe, but you can't really miss something that you've never had. She doesn't miss her parents, because as far as she's concerned they never existed.
It wasn't like she grew up in a horror-house, either. She was a normal kid, living with other normal kids, who just happened to not have parents. Around the time she turned ten, she was adopted out to help an old woman who lived in a cottage on her own; told she could do some washing and cleaning for the lady, who couldn't get around any more. At this point, her thus far incredibly mundane life was about to change. For the woman she was adopted by wasn't your ordinary tea-totaling granny. She experienced in mixing herbs and berries, essentially making homemade medicines and treats for Pokemon. It would be a stretch to call her a genuine Pokewitch herself, as she relied heavily on not only Maltensia to aid in her mixing, but her Pokemon partner, a Misdreavus named Contessa.
For the most part, Maltensia loved her job; feeling like this woman (Mother Birch) was her very own flesh and blood. And she liked caring for Pokemon. Unfortunately, this experience was not meant to last. Throughout history, people are known to be suspicious of lone, powerful women - and Mother Birch was no different. While this caused them to practically live in solitary confinement, they weren't written off the map. One day, while Maltensia had wandered off to gather berries, she returned home to find that someone has set the cottage ablaze.
Fearing for her guardian's life, she entered the cottage, and her short life (being eleven at the time) was nearly ended. She was rescued by Contessa, who...while injured herself in battling for her owner's life, summoned enough strength to bring the child out with her. Mother Birch, unfortunately, was already dead; and Maltensia was orphaned a second time.
Once the fire died out, Maltensia, burned and depressed, was left to pick up the pieces with Contessa - as much as they could take. Neither knew what they could do now; unsure if they could move on, ill and injured as they were. Whoever came up with their next step, whether it was the girl or the screech Pokemon herself, Maltensia does not remember. Unable to fight, and inexperienced with the world, they decided upon a sort of Faustian bargain; Maltensia could be cared for, if she allowed Contessa some possession. Together, rather than apart, they could pool their strength.
The result was rather complex; Maltensia took on characteristic of the screech Pokemon, and while she no longer physically had a Pokemon to help her, she was given the promise that she'd never be alone again. The possession had unsuspected side effects, such as a change in her physical stature as well as possession of some weakened Pokemon powers. But, taking what she learned from her surrogate grandmother, Maltensia set out into the world to learn more about herself, eventually coming to where she is today, deciding herself safe to brace society once more.
Pokemorph Information --
While the method for her transformation into a Pokemon is not typical, Maltensia is similar in many ways to other morphs. There is no hope of her ever being separated from Contessa's spirit. Essentially, the possession was meant to bind them together to mutually heal them; but it leaves them bound. Maltensia has spent her formative, teenage years bound to her Pokemon side; to split them up, or allow them distance from each other would probably mean to leave her with the knowledge and strength of a ten year old. And the Pokemon side would no longer be able to form a physical body anyways.
When the possession was originally formed, Contessa essentially lent her strength and a few of her powers to live on in Maltensia. While she childishly hoped to have a bit of Contessa's nature left with her, almost a voice of reason to converse with, this did not happen. Their personas essentially blended; what was completely Maltensia and what was completely Contessa is indistinguishable. The only noticeable ticks or traits that are specifically influenced by her Pokemorph nature are the fact that she can perform certain spell-like 'moves' similar to Contessa's former Move-set:Psywave - Weak ability to distract opponents without touching them.
Shadow Ball - Conjure small amount of darkness for short period, roughly palm-sized.
Hex - Give opponent a pain without touching them, like a light, distracting pinch.
Power Gem - Conjure small amount of light for short period, roughly palm-sized.
This is hardly strange, as other Pokemorphs are able to access Pokemon-like powers as well.
One might wonder how desperate, or frightened Maltensia might have been to willingly allow Contessa to possess her. However, at that moment, she had lost essentially the only mother she had, and risked losing another; Contessa was already an older Pokemon, and having lost her trainer, she wasn't sure if she wanted to continue on either. The possession was a mutual decision - in this way, Contessa's personal essence, as well as Maltensia's physical body was allowed to heal itself quicker. From time to time, mostly in the early days of possession, Maltensia claimed to feel an almost mental 'hug' from the parasitic relationship, but over the years they things have settled, and the bond is basically that of a regular Pokemorphs. In her desperation at the time, Maltensia assumed that allowing Contessa to possess her would mean she'd never be lonely again, but while that has not been exactly the case, it has provided her with a unique feeling of protection and aided her in not feeling completely helpless as she was growing up.
