 Contests and Coordinators
« Thread Started on Oct 14, 2008, 2:32pm »

You're allowed to post in this thread for any questions (any other posts will be deleted) you may have about contests or coordinators. Coincidentally, this is the only Encyclopedia thread that members can post in. Cool*!

Hints and tips:
Information on move labels and move appeal effects

Rules and guidelines on coordination in Torrenta:

Contests in Torrenta, for the most part, function similarly to the ones you would see in the anime. There are two rounds in a contest; one is an appeal round during which each individual Pokémon simply performs their moves to a judge. The points the Pokémon gets depends entirely on the move, and it does not affect the opponent as it regularly would. For example, if a Pokémon performed Perish Song, the opposing Pokémon would not faint in three turns, and neither would the user; instead, the opposing Pokémon's voltage would go down by one (or stay the same if their voltage were at zero). The move's effect in battle does not apply to the appeal round, in other words. The appeal round lasts four turns (meaning each Pokémon gets four moves) and is about performing moves that have a high amount of appeal hearts and getting a high voltage, explained later in this guide. The second round does not have a turn limit, and is a simple battle round.

Appeal hearts are obtained by using moves that earn the user appeal hearts (check the link to Serebii to see which moves do what). They function as points during the appeal round, and the basic aim is to get as many of them as possible by the end. Moves with secondary effects that only occur in contests, such as Swords Dance doubling the appeal of the next move used, do apply here. Some moves gain extra appeal points if used first or last, such as Earthquake and Thunderbolt. On Torrenta, the same rule applies. Moves that would make the user go first in the next round do not have that secondary effect, such as Quick Attack. Using the same move twice in a row will make the Pokémon lose one appeal heart and they will not gain the amount of hearts they would usually obtain. Please note that Torrenta goes by the Super Contest effects and appeal hearts seen in Diamond and Pearl, and not by the ones seen in Ruby, Sapphire or Emerald. Additionally, there is no maximum number of appeal hearts that a coordinator can obtain.

Voltage is a key part in the appeal round, and requires an understanding of the moves a Pokémon has. Every move is given a label of either Cool, Tough, Smart, Beauty or Cute. If a Pokémon uses two moves of the same label in a row, they gain two voltage points. If they break this streak, they don't "lose" voltage, but they don't gain any.

Example:

Ekans uses Bite, a Tough move.
Ekans has no voltage points.
Ekans uses Earthquake, a Tough move.
Ekans gains two voltage points; one for using Bite, and one for using Earthquake. He just didn't gain any because at that point he didn't use any moves consecutively of the same type.
Ekans uses Poison Fang, a Smart move.
Ekans gains no voltage points because Poison Fang isn't a Tough move.
Ekans uses Dig, a Smart move.
Ekans gains two voltage points for the same reason that he gained two points for using Bite and then Earthquake.
Ekans uses Poison Fang, a Smart move.
Ekans gains one more voltage point for continuing the streak of Smart moves.

There are also some moves that can lower voltage. In this case, it lowers the voltage of the opposing Pokémon. If the move raises voltage, it raises the voltage of the user.

At the end of the appeal round, the total voltage a Pokémon has is divided by two and they are awarded that many appeal hearts, including the ones they earned without voltage. However, using the same move twice in a row will not increase your voltage (and, as stated before, will instead subtract one heart from your overall score).

The second round of the contests is simply a battle round. The goal is just like any regular battle; defeat the opponent. The winner of this battle round gains four appeal hearts added to the hearts they won in the appeal round, and whoever has the highest amount of total appeal hearts is declared the victor of the contest. Therefore, it's still possible to win the appeal round and lose the contest entirely if you don't win the battle, and vice versa; you could lose the appeal round, succeed in the battle round and subsequently win the contest.

If, however, at the end of the appeal round, it wouldn't matter if the loser of the appeal round won the battle round or not, the winner of the appeal round would win automatically.
Ex. Mary Bobbalacious Fantacious Fantastical Sue wins the appeal round with 106 hearts. Gorin has 1. At the end of the battle round, even if he won and gained 4 hearts, his total would be 5 hearts—still less than Mary Bobbalacious Fantacious Fantastical Sue. Because of this, Mary Bobbalacious Fantacious Fantastical Sue wins the contest ribbon without having to go through the battle round.

In the event of a tie, whoever wins the battle round will be declared the victor.

Contest FAQ:

Q: Regarding the battle portion of the contests, do Pokémon gain levels if they win, like in regular battles? Are you allowed to use items?
A: Yes, Pokémon do gain levels like normal, and you are allowed to use items. It's just like a regular old trainer battle, except that if you win, you earn hearts.

Q: Will there be double contests (that is, contests in which two of the coordinator's Pokémon are performing at once)?
A: Double contests happen with the contest E4, so they do appear.

Q: Who are the judges?
A: The judges are the Contest Masters, and sometimes their Pokémon, if applicable; they keep the score. Essentially, the moderator of the contest is the actual judge, but... you get the point.

Q: Do you role play one after another? Ex. Mod posts, then coordinator posts, mod posts, then coordinator posts?
A: Yes.

Q: Can one of our characters defeat both Gyms and Contest Halls at the same time?
A: Yes.

Q: Aren't these contests like the games and the anime?
A: They're a mix of both culminated into a Torrenta version. JAZZ HANDS, ~*~SPARKLE SPARKLE!~*~

Q: Are contests organized into categories (e.g. Beauty, Smart) like the moves are?
A: The contests aren't categorized. The moves are.

Q: Can my character go back to Route One after beating the regular Elite Four, pick a new team, and go through for contests?
A: Your character can't get a new starter Pokémon, but they can go back through the routes for contests, yes.

Q: Say we used two Cool moves in a row and got voltage points for that. If we decide to use two Beauty moves in the next two turns, would we lose voltage points?
A: No. The only way to lose voltage is to have your opponent use a move that lowers voltage on you.

Q: So for the appeal round, do contestants take turns going back and forth, one move at a time, or does Player 1 unleash all four moves, followed by the NPC?
A: It's one move at a time, one move per post.

Q: For the battle stage, do you need to use the same Pokémon you used at the appeal stage or can you use a different Pokémon?
A: You need to use the same one.

Q: Do contest combinations apply here as well? Like Surf -> Dive, Mud Sport -> Water Sport, etc?
A: No.

Q: So say my Pokémon wins the contest in Harku. Do I need to use the same Pokémon for the contest in Sealan, or can I choose a different contestant if I wanted?
A: You can choose a different Pokémon for a different contest.
